this evening, in the garden

We have arrived at the heat of the season, having spent most of the past week breaking ninety degrees.

And the garden loves it!

my first ever dahlia bloom, still opening.
we shall see if I can stick the commitment
to lifting delicate bulbs for winter
last year’s minnie pearl daylily
starting its big show
missouri native coneflower
and false sunflower
chanter alto red stock,
the first try of of three to produce flowers
bachelor buttons, one of three volunteers
from last year’s crop
the very last of lilyfest ’25,
royal sunset takes a bow
petunias and dichondria fill out the grow bag as long beans start their big climb.
the ‘firey bed o’ death’ is filling in,
and lots of little toxic lumpy peppers
are beginning to appear
white yarrow, years after dead flower heads rolled down the slope
and found its new home
the new rustic bed
with yellow terracotta yarrow,
‘blue by you’ salvia, ‘scarlet breeze’ daylilies, euonymus, pink vinca,
and transplanted white yarrow
the first blossom
from recently rescued ‘sunkiss’ coreopsis
the amazing triple bloom ‘ditch lilies’ that also
made the move with us eight years ago

So much is thriving in the garden right now. This is a great year for expansion, and I am riding the current state of it like a giant wave of motivation to keep moving through the high heat of summer!

Enjoy!
